Let’s Talk Trends: Military Might
12/12/2013
Navigating trends is complex business: for every dark-wash skinny jean that gracefully transitions from flash-in-the-pan fad to bona fide wardrobe staple, there are a hundred acid-wash tapers that, well, don’t. The trick is in knowing which trends will shake out which way. That’s where our stylists Richmond and Kristen come in. They oversee every outfit in every catalog and on the website—to say they know a thing or two about what’s on-point at any given moment is an understatement. Who better, then, to invite into a trend tête-à-tête, to discuss looks they’re loving and how to make them work for you?
What makes something “military” per se?
R:
It’s all in the details. I’m loving epaulets, zippers, pockets and straps right now. But silhouettes and colors are also really important.
What big fashion houses have done it well?
R:
I really love how Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent mixes military into his collection. He’ll pair an army jacket over an embellished cocktail dress and it makes each piece cooler.K:
Lanvin! It’s definitely on the serious side, but it still managed to feel super feminine and romantic, with all the gorgeous corded tassels and embroidery. It felt timeless rather than trend-driven.
What’s our spin on military?
R:
We’ve put a definite feminine twist on it through embellishment and silhouette so it feels less masculine.K:
Also, cinched waists, cropped lengths, mini skirts…
What is the one military piece every woman should own this fall?
R:
I say the long vest. It’s my favorite right now. Throw it over everything, and you immediately look cooler.K:
It’s the skirt for me! With an oversized sweater, it just feels easy and effortless. Love.
What do you recommend for women who don’t love how they look in olive drab?
R:
The great thing about this trend is that it isn’t confined to color.K:
Besides, there are so many shades of olive—yellower versus greyer tones—surely one works.
